JENGA 5.0

So in between New York and Chicago I had school for a brief period of time in which I began yet another in the many series of JENGA and then finished after my travels. And that number was 5.0, in which we joined forces with another group. The group we paired up with was ALLURE, consisting of Kacie Leisure, Leslie Canipe and Kathryn Frye. In this project we were to take our four story complex from 4.0 and their four story layout and merge them into an eight story establishment. And from this eight story plan arose [E] MERGE, the name for our new six person group. This eight story unit now had to house five functions, those being a: laundry room, reception area, office, mail room and fitness center. Technical drawings, digital renderings, and models were built as deliverables for this digital presentation.

I also created a stop motion drawing of our original units coming together with ALLURE's being on the bottom and then ours dropping in on top of that. Once that is complete the major elements from previous projects are introduced as you'll notice.

Diving Right Into JENGA 5.0

Coming right back into the studio environment Monday we dove directly into the beginning stages of JENGA 5.0. This began with our group (JIVE) meeting with two other groups and conducting a one hour charrette with each other group. Each charrette was an attempt at blending both four story units from 4.0 into an eight story complex while producing some initial ideas such as diagrams, sketches and statements. Both groups began with initial ideas and examining both complexes and seeing what really could come from it. I’ll admit that was definitely a challenge though because we had roughly ten or so minutes to do that, then we had to get the ball rolling.

JIVE I ALLURE

Our first joining of groups was with ALLURE and our projects both made sense together. It seemed as if they could definitely mesh together but having only a brief amount of time to do that made it difficult. Our units shared similar shapes, being straight lined and having both horizontal and vertical elements. Their unit contained more symmetry than ours did but that could easily be incorporated throughout ours. Anyways I worked with Kacie Leisure and we worked on the perspective sketches and other initial drawings. We struggled because we just simply didn’t know what to sketch so we gave it our all. I worked by drawing my groups unit since that’s what I knew best and then I tried incorporating ALLURE’S principles into ours throughout the eight stories.

JIVE I ANGLING
Moving into the second group we knew what we were getting into, and honestly it was very intimidating. ANGLING’S design from 4.0 was an immersive and complex design that twisted and weaved throughout the entire structure. Our design featured straight lines and clean materials and was contained within an entire square and theirs was the complete opposite. Incorporating many different planes that were connected and wrapped around the entire space, you seem to get a bit lost and overwhelmed by theirs at times. I worked along with fellow JIVE member Austin Loman to do once again more sketches. He began with a sketch that was pretty much what made sense to do and I drew that too and tried elaborating upon that. But by the time the hour was up I was at the same place because I just didn’t know exactly what to do with our two units coming together.

One Wireframe, Two Renderings... Plus Another

One Wireframe, Two Renderings

In my 212 class, our first assignment was rendering on top of a wireframe using only Photoshop. For our new project, we were to take that same wireframe and render it using solely Illustrator.  And my thinking was since my Photoshop rendering was more of a photorealistic approach I'd try something a bit different for the Illustrator file, and possibly humorous.

JENGA 4.0

JENGA 4.0 built right upon 3.0. We were asked to increase our building to 4 stories, while rotating one unit, creating two fire stairs, and introducing an elevator. I worked with members Abigail Buchanan, and Austin Loman to produce this 4 story residential building. For the final product we were asked to make one final deliverable along with a prospectus; the deliverable we decided upon was a board including technical drawings along with digital renderings.

Creating a hybrid of all three words, joint, groove, and glide, a portmanteau derived forming the word jive. Not only does the word jive relate to our three words phonetically, but it also represents the smooth blending of all three spaces that embodies the essence of each concept. This idea communicates clearly in the joining of all three spaces to create a set of balconies that can be seen at all levels of the four story structure. These units also appear to essentially glide glide into their location. Grooves compose what is a means of egress of the four axes. The primary means of the public space on the second and fourth floor is a relaxing retreat where residents can come together. Similarly, the first and fourth floor acts as a gathering place where residents can enjoy the garden.
